Have Questions?

Quick Answers

Do I need fertilizer if I have fish in my planted tank?
Usually yes, especially with regular water changes. Fish waste provides some nutrients, but water changes remove them faster than plants can always absorb. Root tabs and liquid fertilizers help maintain consistent nutrient levels — particularly important for fast-growing plants and tanks without CO₂ injection.
Root tabs or liquid fertilizer — which do I need?
It depends on what plants you're growing. Root-feeding plants like crypts, swords, and most stem plants benefit most from root tabs placed in the substrate near their roots. Plants that absorb nutrients through their leaves — Anubias, Java Fern, mosses — benefit more from liquid fertilizers dosed into the water column. Many tanks use both.
Are plant fertilizers safe for shrimp?
Most quality aquarium fertilizers are safe for shrimp and invertebrates when used as directed. The key concern is copper — some fertilizers contain copper sulfate, which is toxic to shrimp and snails even at low concentrations. Always check the ingredients list. All products in this collection are selected with invertebrate safety in mind.
How often do I need to replace root tabs?
Root tabs typically last three to four months before the nutrients are depleted and need replacing. Push them into the substrate near the roots of heavy-feeding plants. Use one tab per four to six inch radius. You can extend the interval slightly in heavily planted tanks with good fish stocking.

About This Collection

Plant Care

Live aquarium plants need more than just light and CO₂ — they also require a steady supply of macro and micronutrients to grow well and stay healthy. In an active aquarium with regular water changes, nutrients can become depleted faster than fish waste can replace them. Targeted fertilization fills those gaps. There are two main approaches to planted tank fertilization: root tabs, which deliver nutrients directly to the substrate where root-feeding plants absorb them, and liquid fertilizers, which dose nutrients into the water column for plants that feed primarily through their leaves. Many planted tanks benefit from both — root tabs for stem plants, swords, and crypts planted in substrate, and liquid fertilizers for mosses, Anubias, Java Fern, and other plants attached to hardscape. All fertilizers in this collection are formulated for freshwater planted aquariums and are safe for fish, shrimp, and invertebrates when used as directed. Avoid over-fertilizing — excess nutrients, especially phosphates and nitrates, can fuel algae growth. Start with the recommended dose and adjust based on how your plants respond.
