Quick Answers

Do I really need a water conditioner?
Yes, if you use tap water. Chlorine and chloramine are added to municipal water to kill bacteria — including the beneficial bacteria your tank depends on. Even small amounts can stress or kill fish and shrimp. Add a dechlorinator every time you do a water change, dosed for the total tank volume (not just the water being added).
How do I cycle a new aquarium faster?
Bottled beneficial bacteria products can significantly reduce the time it takes to establish a nitrogen cycle in a new tank. Add a full dose on day one, then daily for the first week. Test ammonia and nitrite regularly. A tank is considered cycled when ammonia and nitrite both read zero and nitrate is detectable.
Can I use water conditioners with shrimp?
Yes — all products in this collection are safe for freshwater shrimp and invertebrates when used as directed. Some conditioners also temporarily detoxify ammonia and nitrite during the cycle, which is helpful in new tanks with sensitive shrimp. Always check that the product does not contain copper, which is toxic to invertebrates.
How often should I dose beneficial bacteria?
For a new tank, dose daily for the first week. After that, redose after significant water changes, filter media cleanings, or any event that may have disrupted your bacterial colony (like treating with medication or a power outage). For established tanks, monthly maintenance doses are optional but can help maintain a robust colony.

About This Collection

Water Conditioners

Tap water straight from the faucet is not safe for aquarium fish, shrimp, or plants. Municipal water contains chlorine and chloramine — disinfectants that are harmless to humans but toxic to aquatic life and the beneficial bacteria that make a cycled tank work. A quality water conditioner neutralizes these before you add water to your tank. Beyond dechlorination, establishing and maintaining a healthy nitrogen cycle is one of the most important things you can do for your aquarium. Beneficial bacteria convert toxic ammonia (from fish waste and uneaten food) into nitrite, and then into the far less harmful nitrate. In a new tank this process can take four to eight weeks — bottled bacteria products can significantly accelerate this timeline and help stabilize parameters in an already-established tank after a disruption like a filter cleaning or large water change. All conditioners and bacteria products in this collection are safe for freshwater aquariums including shrimp, plants, and sensitive invertebrates. Follow dosing instructions carefully — more is not always better, especially with dechlorinators dosed at the full tank volume during a partial water change. Products ship Monday through Thursday alongside plants and livestock.
