Nerites Won’t Breed in Freshwater

Unlike Mystery Snails or Ramshorns, Nerite Snails cannot reproduce in freshwater. You get the algae control without the population explosion — ever.

15+ Snail Species in Stock

From algae-eating Nerites to colorful Mystery Snails and unique Rabbit Snails, Razz Aquatics carries one of the deeper freshwater snail selections for planted tanks and shrimp keepers.

What Freshwater Snails Actually Do

  • Algae Grazing

Nerite snails graze glass, rocks, and hardscape continuously, reducing visible algae between water changes. They help manage algae — they don’t replace good tank maintenance.

  • Leftover Food Cleanup

Mystery and Rabbit snails scavenge uneaten food from the substrate before it breaks down and raises ammonia. They work alongside your filter, not instead of it.

  • Substrate Activity

Rabbit snails move through and gently aerate substrate, which benefits root systems in planted tanks and prevents compaction over time.

For Shrimp & Nano Fish Keepers

Mystery, Nerite, and Rabbit snails are widely kept alongside freshwater shrimp and nano fish without conflict. They occupy different niches in the tank and rarely compete. Snail shells also develop biofilm that shrimp graze on — a natural bonus in established shrimp tanks. Every tank is different — we don’t make blanket compatibility guarantees, but these are popular combinations in the hobby.

Assassin Snails: For Pest Control, Not Algae

  • Not for shrimp tanks.

Assassin Snails prey on shrimp, especially juveniles and recently molted individuals. Do not add them to any tank with shrimp you want to keep.

  • Not an algae eater or general cleanup crew.

They eat other snails exclusively — bladder snails, trumpet snails, and other pest species. They won’t help with algae, leftover food, or plant debris.

  • One or two is usually enough.

In most aquariums under 30 gallons, a single Assassin Snail will address a pest problem over several weeks. They breed slowly and won’t become a pest themselves.

What to Expect When Your Snails Arrive
1
Shell Retraction is Normal

Freshwater snails almost always retract into their shells during shipping. This is a stress response, not a sign of poor health. Place them in your tank and give them 15–30 minutes before drawing any conclusions.

2
Check the Operculum

The operculum is the small trapdoor that seals the shell opening. If it’s intact and firm, your snail is alive and adjusting. A dead snail will have a soft, open shell and a strong smell of decay within minutes.

3
First 24–48 Hours

Most snails begin moving within a few hours. Rabbit Snails are the slowest to emerge and may stay retracted up to 24 hours. Let them acclimate on their own schedule — don’t force it.

Live Arrival Guarantee — All Snails Covered

All freshwater snail orders are covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee. If snails arrive dead on delivery, document it with a photo in original packaging the same day and reach out. We’ll issue a refund, store credit, or replacement. Normal shell retraction and acclimation are not covered, but we’re here to help if you’re unsure about a snail’s condition.

Adding snails to a shrimp or fish order? The higher livestock shipping threshold applies to the whole order when live animals are included.
