Anubias Nana Petite Potted

Anubias barteri var. nana 'Petite'

Why We Love This Plant

  • Selected for shrimp tanks
  • Improves water quality
  • No CO₂ required
  • Beginner-friendly

Anubias Nana 'Petite' is the smallest cultivated variety of Anubias barteri var. nana — a slow-growing rhizome plant whose leaves stay very small compared with standard Anubias nana. It ships potted in a small mesh basket with rock wool, but the long-term home for Anubias is attached to hardscape, not in substrate.

As a foreground or hardscape attachment plant, the Petite excels in shrimp and nano tanks. It grows under low light without CO2 or fertilizer, tolerates a wide range of water parameters, and stays compact, which makes it well-suited for nano aquariums. One of the most reliable plants in the freshwater hobby, regardless of skill level.

Care Notes

Anubias grows attached to hardscape, not in substrate. The rhizome — the thick horizontal stem at the base of the leaves — must remain ABOVE the substrate; buried rhizomes rot. After removing from the pot and rinsing most of the rock wool out of the roots, attach with super glue gel or thread to driftwood or a flat stone.

Low light is fine; this plant does not need CO2 or fertilizer to survive. Excess light accelerates algae growth on the slow-growing leaves, so don't push lighting harder than the rest of your aquascape requires. Trim damaged leaves at the rhizome with sharp scissors.

Why We Love This Plant

01

The Bulletproof Foreground Plant

Anubias Nana 'Petite' tolerates conditions that kill most plants: low light, no CO2, hard water, swings in parameters. If you can keep shrimp alive, you can keep this Anubias alive.

02

Stays Compact

Petite is the smallest cultivar of Anubias nana, with leaves much smaller than the standard variety. Well-suited to nano aquariums and unlikely to shade out other foreground plants.

03

Shrimp-Safe Hardscape Anchor

Selected for shrimp tanks and handled with invertebrate safety in mind. The thick, slow-growing leaves give shrimp a stable grazing surface that hosts heavy biofilm.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Remove the plant from the pot and gently rinse most of the rock wool out of the rhizome before placing in your tank — removing most of the rock wool helps the roots adjust and makes placement cleaner. Glue or tie the rhizome to driftwood or a flat stone with the rhizome ABOVE the substrate. Anubias is a slow grower; expect new leaves every few weeks under low light, faster with more light. Wipe algae off mature leaves by hand if it appears.

Common Questions

Anubias Nana Petite Potted FAQ

Is Anubias Nana Petite safe for shrimp?+
Yes — Anubias is great for shrimp tanks. We select plants for shrimp tanks and handle them with invertebrate safety in mind. The thick, slow-growing leaves host biofilm that shrimp graze on constantly.
How do I attach it?+
Remove the plant from the pot, rinse most of the rock wool out from around the rhizome, and either tie it to driftwood or stone with thin thread or apply super glue gel to the underside of the rhizome and press against your hardscape. Hold for 30 seconds. The rhizome — the thick horizontal stem — must stay ABOVE the substrate.
Why is my Anubias growing so slowly?+
All Anubias are slow growers, and the Petite variety is even slower. Expect new leaves every two to four weeks under low light — that pace is normal and healthy. Forcing growth with intense light usually just causes algae on the leaves.
How is it shipped?+
Plants are packed with damp protective material to help protect them in transit. Weather protection may be used when conditions require it. Plants typically ship Monday through Thursday so they avoid sitting over the weekend.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — Live Plant Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photograph the plant in its original packaging on the day of delivery, before trimming or replanting, and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics' discretion.
Do I need CO2 or fertilizer?+
No. Anubias Nana 'Petite' grows under low light without CO2 or fertilizer. Growth speeds up with better lighting and dosing, but the plant thrives in low-tech setups without any supplementation.
Why can't I plant it in substrate?+
Anubias is an epiphyte. Its rhizome (the thick horizontal stem) needs to stay above the substrate; burying it causes the rhizome to rot. Roots can extend into substrate or wrap around hardscape, but the rhizome itself must be exposed.
How big does it get?+
Anubias Nana 'Petite' is the smallest cultivated variety of Anubias barteri var. nana. Leaves stay very small compared with standard Anubias nana, and the plant stays compact — well-suited for nano aquariums.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+. Adding livestock to your order unlocks free 2-Day Shipping at $120+ or free Overnight at $200+.
