Vallisneria spiralis is a classic ribbon-leaf background plant with long, straight green blades that grow from a central crown and spread by sending out runners. It ships potted in a small mesh basket with rock wool, but for long-term growth it should be planted directly in substrate.
Vallisneria is one of the most reliable background plants in the freshwater hobby — fast-growing once established, undemanding on light, and capable of forming a dense vertical backdrop within a few months. Excellent for shrimp tanks because the long blades provide constant biofilm surface and natural midwater cover.
Care Notes
Vallisneria roots heavily in substrate. After removing from the pot and rinsing most of the rock wool off the roots, plant with the crown (where the leaves meet the roots) ABOVE the substrate. Burying the crown causes rot. Root tabs help speed establishment, especially in inert substrates like sand or gravel.
Medium light is ideal. CO2 is not required — Vallisneria spreads aggressively in low-tech tanks once it settles. The plant propagates by runners; new plantlets can be left to form a thicket or trimmed and replanted elsewhere.
