Christmas Moss

Vesicularia montagnei

Why We Love This Plant

  • Selected for shrimp tanks
  • Improves water quality
  • No CO₂ required
  • Beginner-friendly

Christmas Moss (Vesicularia montagnei) is named for the way its triangular fronds branch outward in a Christmas-tree pattern — a more structured, geometric growth form than the irregular tangle of Java Moss. This product is sold as a loose portion ready to be attached to hardscape, shaped into a moss wall, or allowed to spread freely.

Christmas Moss is easy to grow and tolerates a wide range of water parameters. It grows more slowly than Java Moss but the distinctive triangular branching pattern makes it a popular choice for aquascapers who want a more intentional moss look. Great for shrimp tanks — the dense fronds host biofilm and provide shrimplet cover.

Care Notes

Christmas Moss attaches to hardscape over time. Tie or glue portions to driftwood, stone, or mesh with thin thread or aquarium-safe super glue gel. Alternatively, place loose portions on the substrate weighted with a flat stone.

CO2 and fertilizer are not required. Growth is faster under stronger light with basic liquid dosing. Trim the outer fronds every 3–4 weeks to maintain the dense triangular pattern and prevent inner growth from dying off due to light deprivation.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Attach the portion to driftwood with super glue gel or thin thread. Trim the outer surface every few weeks to keep the inner growth healthy and preserve the Christmas-tree branching pattern. Trimmings can be glued or tied to additional hardscape to expand coverage. Takes longer to establish on hardscape than Java Moss but the structured look is worth the patience.

Common Questions

Christmas Moss FAQ

Is Christmas Moss safe for shrimp?+
Yes — Christmas Moss is great for shrimp tanks. We select plants for shrimp tanks and handle them with invertebrate safety in mind. The dense fronds host biofilm and give shrimplets natural cover.
How do I attach it?+
Tie to driftwood or stone with thin cotton thread, or use aquarium-safe super glue gel. Alternatively, place the portion on substrate weighted with a flat stone. The moss attaches naturally over a few weeks.
How is it shipped?+
Plants are packed with damp protective material to help protect them in transit. Weather protection may be used when conditions require it. Plants typically ship Monday through Thursday so they avoid sitting over the weekend.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — Live Plant Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photograph the plant in its original packaging on the day of delivery, before trimming or replanting, and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics' discretion.
Do I need CO2 or fertilizer?+
No. Christmas Moss grows under low to medium light without CO2 or fertilizer. Growth is faster with stronger light and basic liquid dosing.
How is this different from the Christmas Moss Mat?+
The loose portion requires you to attach and position it yourself. The Christmas Moss Mat comes pre-grown on a stainless mesh panel — an instant moss-covered surface you drop into the tank. The mat establishes faster and stays in place from day one.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+. Adding livestock to your order unlocks free 2-Day Shipping at $120+ or free Overnight at $200+.
