Cryptocoryne lutea is a hardy mid-sized Crypt with broader, slightly undulating green leaves on relatively long stems. It is one of the most adaptable Crypts in the hobby — forgiving of a wide range of water parameters and tolerant of many substrate types. It ships potted in a small mesh basket with rock wool but should be planted directly in substrate for long-term growth.
Lutea is a great midground plant in mid-sized to larger tanks. Like all Crypts, it is slow-growing once established and benefits from being left undisturbed. Grows under low to medium light without CO2.
Care Notes
Crypt lutea roots in substrate. After removing from the pot and rinsing most of the rock wool off the roots, plant with the crown (where the leaves meet the roots) ABOVE the substrate. Burying the crown causes rot. Root tabs help significantly — Crypts are heavy root feeders.
Crypts can melt after a parameter change or transplant — leaves yellow and dissolve, but the roots stay alive. Leave the plant in place and it usually regrows from the rhizome over a few weeks. Avoid moving Crypts once they are settled.
