Beginner-friendly
Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Tropica' is a compact, slow-growing rosette plant with broad, hammered-texture leaves in a deep olive-brown to bronze tone. The 'Tropica' cultivar is shorter and more textured than standard wendtii, making it useful as a foreground-to-midground accent. It ships potted in a small mesh basket with rock wool but should be planted directly in substrate for long-term growth.
Like all Crypts, 'Tropica' is slow-growing and tolerates a wide range of water parameters. It grows under low to medium light without CO2 — a reliable, visually distinct choice for low-tech tanks and shrimp setups.
Care Notes
Crypt 'Tropica' roots in substrate. After removing from the pot and rinsing most of the rock wool off the roots, plant with the crown (where the leaves meet the roots) ABOVE the substrate. Burying the crown causes rot. Root tabs help significantly — Crypts are heavy root feeders.
Crypts can melt after a parameter change or transplant — leaves yellow and dissolve, but the roots stay alive. Leave the plant in place and it usually regrows from the rhizome over a few weeks. Avoid moving Crypts once they are settled.

Why We Love This Plant
01
Hammered, Textured Leaves
The 'Tropica' cultivar has noticeably more leaf texture than standard wendtii — a pebbled, hammered surface that picks up light differently than smoother plants.
02
Bronze-Brown Color
A reliable source of warm bronze-brown tones in a low-tech tank. Stands out beautifully against green plants and dark substrate.
03
Selected for Shrimp Tanks
Selected for shrimp tanks and handled with invertebrate safety in mind. The broad leaves give shrimp natural cover.
Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation
Use 'Tropica' where you want bronze-brown texture against green plants — it stands out beautifully against Anubias or moss. Plant it and leave it. Root tabs every few months keep the color and leaf structure strong, especially in inert substrates.

Remove from the pot, rinse most of the rock wool off the roots, and plant in substrate with the crown ABOVE the substrate. Burying the crown causes rot.
How is this different from regular Crypt Wendtii?+
'Tropica' is shorter and more textured than standard wendtii, with a more pronounced hammered leaf surface and warmer bronze tones.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
