Beginner-friendly
Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis parvula) is a compact grass-like carpeting plant with thin, upright green blades that spread by runners to form a low, soft foreground lawn. It is one of the more achievable carpeting plants for low-to-medium-tech tanks — it will carpet without CO2 under medium-to-high light, though CO2 significantly speeds up the process and produces a denser result.
Dwarf Hairgrass tolerates a wider range of conditions than HC Cuba, making it a more accessible foreground carpeting option for aquascapers who don't have a CO2 system or are working with lower light. Spreads by runners; a few starter clumps fill in over several weeks.
Care Notes
Dwarf Hairgrass roots directly into substrate. Separate the pot into small clumps and press each clump into fine-to-medium substrate approximately one inch apart with the crowns above the substrate. Root tabs help in inert substrates.
Under medium-to-high light without CO2, carpeting is achievable but slower — expect 8–12 weeks or more. CO2 speeds this up significantly. Trim the carpet regularly to prevent the blades from growing tall and flopping over rather than staying low.

Why We Love This Plant
01
Most Accessible Carpet Grass
More tolerant than HC Cuba. Will carpet under medium-to-high light without CO2 — the most achievable foreground lawn for low-to-medium-tech tanks.
02
Spreads by Runners
A few starter clumps spread by runners to fill in the foreground over several weeks. CO2 significantly speeds up the process.
03
Selected for Shrimp Tanks
Selected for shrimp tanks and handled with invertebrate safety in mind. The low, dense carpet gives shrimplets excellent foreground cover.
Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation
Dwarf Hairgrass is the most achievable foreground grass-carpet in a low-tech tank. Separate into small clumps and plant them an inch apart across the foreground. The blades grow taller without CO2, so trim regularly if you want the carpet to stay low. With CO2 it fills in much faster and stays denser.

Common Questions
Dwarf Hairgrass FAQ
Is Dwarf Hairgrass safe for shrimp?+
Yes — Dwarf Hairgrass is great for shrimp tanks. We select plants for shrimp tanks and handle them with invertebrate safety in mind. The low, dense carpet gives shrimplets excellent foreground cover.
How do I plant it?+
Separate into small clumps and press each clump gently into substrate about one inch apart with the crowns above the substrate. Root tabs help in inert substrates like sand or gravel.
Why are my blades growing tall instead of carpeting?+
Blades grow taller under lower light as the plant stretches for light. Increase light intensity and trim the blades regularly to encourage more horizontal, compact growth.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+. Adding livestock to your order unlocks free 2-Day Shipping at $120+ or free Overnight at $200+.
Do I need CO2?+
Not required, but it significantly speeds up carpeting and produces a denser result. Under medium-to-high light without CO2 the carpet is achievable but slower.
How long does it take to carpet?+
With CO2 under good light, expect substantial coverage in 4–6 weeks. Without CO2, expect 8–12 weeks or longer depending on conditions.
How is it shipped?+
Plants are packed with damp protective material to help protect them in transit. Weather protection may be used when conditions require it. Plants typically ship Monday through Thursday so they avoid sitting over the weekend.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — Live Plant Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photograph the plant in its original packaging on the day of delivery, before trimming or replanting, and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics' discretion.
