Beginner-friendly
Dwarf Sagittaria (Sagittaria subulata) is a compact foreground-to-midground plant with narrow, slightly arching grass-like blades. It spreads by runners to form a low, dense field of green that works as a foreground carpet in larger tanks or a midground stand in smaller setups. It ships potted in a small mesh basket with rock wool but should be planted directly in substrate for long-term growth.
Dwarf Sag is one of the easier carpeting-style plants in the hobby — it tolerates a wide range of water parameters, does not require CO2, and spreads readily once established. A reliable choice for low-tech planted tanks and shrimp setups.
Care Notes
Dwarf Sagittaria roots in substrate. After removing from the pot and rinsing most of the rock wool off the roots, plant with the crown (where the leaves meet the roots) ABOVE the substrate. Burying the crown causes rot.
Medium light is ideal for a denser, lower carpet; under lower light the blades stretch taller in search of light. CO2 is not required, but root tabs help in inert substrates. The plant spreads by runners; new plantlets fill in around the parent over the following weeks.

Why We Love This Plant
01
Easy Foreground or Midground Plant
Dwarf Sag is one of the easier 'carpeting style' plants in the hobby. It spreads readily without CO2 and tolerates a wide range of parameters.
02
Spreads by Runners
A few starter clumps form a dense field of grass-like blades within a couple of months as runners fill in the space.
03
Selected for Shrimp Tanks
Selected for shrimp tanks and handled with invertebrate safety in mind. The dense low growth gives shrimplets natural cover.
Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation
Plant Dwarf Sag in small clumps spaced 1-2 inches apart across the foreground or midground area. The runners will fill in the gaps over weeks. For a denser, shorter carpet, give the plant good light — under lower light it stretches taller, which is fine if you want a taller midground stand instead of a carpet.

Common Questions
Dwarf Sagittaria FAQ
Is Dwarf Sagittaria safe for shrimp?+
Yes — Dwarf Sag is great for shrimp tanks. We select plants for shrimp tanks and handle them with invertebrate safety in mind.
How do I plant it?+
Remove from the pot, rinse most of the rock wool off the roots, separate into smaller clumps if you want faster carpeting, and plant in substrate with the crown ABOVE the substrate. Space clumps 1-2 inches apart.
Will it spread?+
Yes — Dwarf Sag spreads by runners with new plantlets attached. A few starters form a dense field within a couple of months.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+. Adding livestock to your order unlocks free 2-Day Shipping at $120+ or free Overnight at $200+.
Do I need CO2 or fertilizer?+
No. Dwarf Sagittaria grows well without CO2. Root tabs and basic liquid fertilizer help in inert substrates like sand or gravel.
How do I get a low carpet?+
Give the plant good light. Under lower light Dwarf Sag stretches taller as it reaches for light. Under medium light it stays shorter and forms a denser carpet.
How is it shipped?+
Plants are packed with damp protective material to help protect them in transit. Weather protection may be used when conditions require it. Plants typically ship Monday through Thursday so they avoid sitting over the weekend.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — Live Plant Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photograph the plant in its original packaging on the day of delivery, before trimming or replanting, and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics' discretion.
