Hikari Algae Wafers were developed specifically for plecostomus, otocinclus, loaches, and other herbivorous bottom feeders that are notoriously difficult to feed with standard flake or pellet foods. The uniquely shaped disc sinks immediately, retains its shape for extended periods, and allows less aggressive species steady access to the food without it dissolving into the water column.
Formulated with high levels of vegetable matter including pure-cultured spirulina and chlorella algae, these wafers support natural color enhancement and provide balanced nutrition as a complete daily diet. Stabilized vitamin C supports immune health. Also suitable for snails, freshwater shrimp, and crustaceans as a supplemental vegetable food source.

Why It Works
Product Highlights
01
High Vegetable Content
Formulated with spirulina, chlorella, and high levels of vegetable matter that herbivorous bottom feeders prefer and require for a complete diet.
02
Sinks & Holds Shape
The uniquely shaped disc sinks rapidly and retains its form, giving less aggressive bottom feeders extended access to nutrition without the food dissolving.
03
Great for Snails & Shrimp Too
Works well as a supplemental vegetable food source for freshwater snails, shrimp, and other crustaceans alongside their regular diet.
How to Use
Feeding Instructions
Drop one or more wafers directly into the aquarium. Feed no more than the amount your fish will completely consume within two hours. Many bottom feeders are nocturnal — for best results, feed late in the day or after lights-out.
Avoid overfeeding and always remove uneaten food after the feeding period to prevent water quality issues. For smaller tanks, break the wafer into pieces before adding to the tank.
Feeding Guide
Feed small amounts 3–4 times per week
Remove uneaten food within 24 hours
Observe shrimp — adjust quantity if food disappears quickly
Supplement with blanched vegetables 1–2× per week
Pairs Well With
Complete Their Feeding Routine
Pair staple foods with treats, botanicals, and feeding accessories for a more complete routine.

Are algae wafers safe for shrimp?+
Yes — algae wafers are commonly fed to shrimp as a supplemental vegetable food source. Note that standard Algae Wafers contain copper sulfate, which is toxic to shrimp at elevated concentrations. Feed sparingly and remove uneaten portions promptly.
Will these cloud the water?+
No — the wafers are formulated to retain their shape rather than dissolve quickly, which keeps the water clear. Remove uneaten portions after the feeding period.
