Hikari First Bites

Hikari First Bites is a fine-particle, semi-floating food scientifically formulated to provide newborn fish fry the precise nutritional balance they need during the earliest developmental stages of their lives. High in premium fish meal protein, First Bites supports rapid growth, proper organ development, excellent body form, and superior disease resistance from day one.

The unique low-heat production process preserves the vitamins, nutrients, and amino acids that fry are most sensitive to. The semi-floating format gives fry at all water levels access to the food. Suitable for livebearers from birth and egglayers once their yolk sac is nearly consumed. Also works well as a fine food for very small nano fish species like Ember Tetras and Strawberry Rasboras.

Why It Works

Product Highlights

01

48% Crude Protein

High protein from premium fish meal provides the amino acids fry need for rapid growth, proper body form, and organ development during their most critical developmental stage.

02

Semi-Floating Fine Particle

The semi-floating format gives fry at all water levels access to the food, reducing uneaten waste compared to purely floating or sinking fry foods.

03

For Livebearers & Egglayers

Suitable for guppy and other livebearer fry from birth, and for egglayer fry once the yolk sac is nearly consumed. Also useful for very small nano fish.

How to Use

Feeding Instructions

For livebearers: begin feeding immediately after birth. For egglayers: start feeding when the yolk sac is nearly consumed. Feed the amount fry will consume in 1–3 minutes. For optimum results, feed as many times per day as possible — up to 10 times daily for very young fry. Frequent small feedings are more effective than fewer large ones.

For mid-water or bottom-feeding fry, soak a small amount in a cup of aquarium water before adding to help it sink faster. Remove any uneaten food and avoid overfeeding — water quality in fry tanks is especially critical.

Feeding Guide
  • Feed small amounts 3–4 times per week
  • Remove uneaten food within 24 hours
  • Observe shrimp — adjust quantity if food disappears quickly
  • Supplement with blanched vegetables 1–2× per week

Common Questions

Hikari First Bites FAQ

When should I start feeding First Bites?+
For livebearers (guppies, mollies, platies): begin feeding immediately after birth. For egglayers (tetras, rasboras, barbs): wait until the yolk sac is nearly consumed — usually 2–4 days after hatching — before introducing food.
Can I use this for nano fish too?+
Yes — First Bites works well as a daily food for very small nano fish like Ember Tetras, Strawberry Rasboras, and other species with very small mouths that cannot eat standard pellet or flake foods.
What is the guaranteed analysis?+
Crude Protein: 48% min. Crude Fat: 3% min. Crude Fiber: 2% max. Moisture: 10% max. Ash: 18% max. Phosphorus: 1.3% min.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Free shipping on plants and dry goods at $75+.
How often should I feed fry?+
For optimum results, feed as often as possible — up to 10 times daily for very young fry. Feed only the amount the fry will consume in 1–3 minutes per feeding. Frequent small meals support better growth than fewer large feedings.
How do I get it to sink for bottom-feeding fry?+
Soak a small amount in a cup of aquarium water before adding to the tank. This causes the food to absorb water and sink more rapidly, giving bottom-feeding fry better access.
How is it shipped?+
Packed securely and shipped Monday through Thursday via standard ground shipping. Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+. Transit times vary by location.
Can I order this with livestock?+
Yes. Dry goods can ship together with livestock orders.
