Ludwigia repens is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly red stem plants in the freshwater hobby. It has broad, rounded leaves in green to red tones depending on light intensity — under medium light it grows as a green-to-olive stem, while under stronger light with iron-rich dosing the leaves develop deeper red tones. It ships as a small bunch of cut stems, lead-weighted together at the base.
Ludwigia repens is more forgiving than most red stems and tolerates a wider range of conditions. The stems should be separated, trimmed at the base, and planted individually in substrate.
Care Notes
Ludwigia repens grows well under medium-to-high light. CO2 is not required but improves both color intensity and growth rate. Iron-rich liquid dosing helps develop the red tones. Trim tall stems regularly and replant the tops to keep the bunch dense.
