Mini Bolbitis (baby Leaf) Potted

Bolbitis heteroclita 'Difformis'

Why We Love This Plant

  • Selected for shrimp tanks
  • Improves water quality
  • No CO₂ required
  • Beginner-friendly

Mini Bolbitis (Bolbitis heteroclita 'Difformis') is a compact, slow-growing fern with finely divided baby-leaf fronds that radiate outward from a central rhizome. It ships potted in a small mesh basket with rock wool, but like most rhizome ferns, the long-term home for Bolbitis is attached to hardscape, not buried in substrate.

Compared with regular African Bolbitis (heudelotii), this Mini variety stays much more compact — better suited to mid-sized planted and shrimp tanks than the larger African form. The dense fern texture gives shrimp excellent biofilm grazing surface and shrimplet hiding spots.

Care Notes

Mini Bolbitis is an epiphytic fern — it grows attached to hardscape with the rhizome (the thick horizontal stem at the base) ABOVE the substrate, not buried. After removing from the pot and rinsing most of the rock wool out of the roots, attach with super glue gel or thread to driftwood or a flat stone.

Low to medium light is ideal; CO2 is not required but speeds growth. Growth is slow regardless of conditions. Trim damaged fronds at the rhizome with sharp scissors. Tolerates a wide range of water parameters.

Why We Love This Plant

01

Fern Texture in a Compact Form

Most aquatic ferns get large enough to dominate a tank. Mini Bolbitis stays compact while delivering the fine, divided fern foliage that makes ferns visually distinct.

02

Low-Tech Friendly

Grows under low light without CO2 and tolerates a wide range of parameters. A useful low-tech alternative to more demanding ferns.

03

Shrimp and Shrimplet Habitat

Great for shrimp tanks. The dense fern texture is excellent for biofilm grazing and shrimplet cover.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Treat Mini Bolbitis like a small fern version of Anubias — attach to driftwood with the rhizome ABOVE substrate, never bury it. The fine baby-leaf foliage hosts plenty of biofilm and gives shrimplets dense cover. Pair with Anubias or moss for a textured low-tech hardscape.

Common Questions

Mini Bolbitis (baby Leaf) Potted FAQ

Is Mini Bolbitis safe for shrimp?+
Yes — Mini Bolbitis is great for shrimp tanks. We select plants for shrimp tanks and handle them with invertebrate safety in mind. The dense fronds are excellent shrimplet cover.
How do I attach it?+
Remove from the pot, rinse most of the rock wool from the rhizome, and either tie it to driftwood or stone with thin thread or apply super glue gel to the underside of the rhizome. The rhizome must stay ABOVE the substrate.
How is this different from regular Bolbitis?+
This Mini variety stays much more compact than full Bolbitis heudelotii. Better suited to mid-sized planted tanks and shrimp setups than the larger African form.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+. Adding livestock to your order unlocks free 2-Day Shipping at $120+ or free Overnight at $200+.
Do I need CO2 or fertilizer?+
No. Mini Bolbitis grows under low to medium light without CO2 or fertilizer, though growth speeds up with both.
Why can't I plant it in substrate?+
Mini Bolbitis is an epiphytic fern. The rhizome (the thick horizontal stem) needs to stay above the substrate; burying it causes the rhizome to rot.
How is it shipped?+
Plants are packed with damp protective material to help protect them in transit. Weather protection may be used when conditions require it. Plants typically ship Monday through Thursday so they avoid sitting over the weekend.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — Live Plant Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photograph the plant in its original packaging on the day of delivery, before trimming or replanting, and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics' discretion.
