Pogostemon Stellatus (Narrow-Leaf)

Pogostemon stellatus 'Narrow Leaf'

Why We Love This Plant

  • Selected for shrimp tanks
  • Improves water quality
  • No CO₂ required
  • Beginner-friendly

Pogostemon stellatus 'Narrow Leaf' is a striking background stem plant with whorls of fine needle-shaped leaves arranged in star-burst clusters along each stem. Under good lighting and CO2 it develops warm orange-to-red tones on the upper leaves, making it one of the most visually striking stem plants in the hobby. It ships as a small bunch of cut stems, lead-weighted together at the base.

Stellatus 'Narrow Leaf' is more demanding than easy stems like Bacopa. It rewards higher light and CO2 with vivid color and fast vertical growth, but it will survive in low-tech tanks with a less dramatic green form. The stems should be separated, trimmed at the base, and planted individually in substrate.

Care Notes

Pogostemon stellatus 'Narrow Leaf' grows best under medium-high light with CO2 injection and consistent nutrients — the conditions that bring out its signature warm color tones. It will grow under medium light without CO2 but stays mostly green and produces less compact growth.

Trim tall stems regularly and replant the tops to keep the bunch dense. Stellatus is a fast grower under good conditions; topping every couple of weeks is normal. Iron-rich dosing helps maintain the red-orange color on new leaves.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

For the dramatic orange-to-red color this plant is known for, give it strong light, CO2 injection, and iron-rich dosing. Without those, it will grow as a tall green stem plant — still attractive, just not the signature look. Separate the bunch and plant individual stems an inch apart for the best fill-in over a few weeks.

Common Questions

Pogostemon Stellatus (Narrow-Leaf) FAQ

Is Pogostemon stellatus safe for shrimp?+
Yes — Pogostemon stellatus is great for shrimp tanks. We select plants for shrimp tanks and handle them with invertebrate safety in mind.
How do I plant the bunch?+
Remove the lead weight, separate the bunch into individual stems, and trim about half an inch off the bottom of each. Push each stem about an inch into substrate, spaced an inch apart. Planted in a bunch with the lead weight intact, the base will rot.
How fast does it grow?+
Fast, under good conditions. Topping every couple of weeks is normal when CO2 is supplied. Without CO2, growth is slower but still steady.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+. Adding livestock to your order unlocks free 2-Day Shipping at $120+ or free Overnight at $200+.
Do I need CO2 or fertilizer?+
CO2 is strongly recommended for this plant. It will grow without CO2 in a low-tech tank but stays mostly green and grows less compactly. Iron-rich dosing helps bring out the warm color tones.
How do I get the orange or red color?+
Stellatus 'Narrow Leaf' may develop warm orange-to-red tones on the upper leaves under medium-high light, CO2 injection, and consistent iron-rich dosing. Color is not guaranteed and depends on conditions.
How is it shipped?+
Plants are packed with damp protective material to help protect them in transit. Weather protection may be used when conditions require it. Plants typically ship Monday through Thursday so they avoid sitting over the weekend.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — Live Plant Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photograph the plant in its original packaging on the day of delivery, before trimming or replanting, and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics' discretion.
