Red Melon Sword

Echinodorus 'Red Melon'

Why We Love This Plant

  • Selected for shrimp tanks
  • Improves water quality
  • No CO₂ required
  • Beginner-friendly

Red Melon Sword is a cultivated Echinodorus hybrid with broad, melon-leaf-shaped foliage that emerges red and gradually matures to deep green. It is a striking centerpiece rosette plant for mid-sized and larger tanks, valued for its warm color tones and bold leaf shape. It ships potted in a small mesh basket with rock wool but should be planted directly in substrate for long-term growth.

Like other Swords, Red Melon is a heavy root feeder. It rewards strong light and consistent root fertilization with vivid new-leaf color; under lower light or with weak substrate dosing, the red tones may fade and growth slows. A useful centerpiece option for aquascapers who want warm color in a low-tech tank.

Care Notes

Red Melon Sword roots deeply in substrate. After removing from the pot and rinsing most of the rock wool off the roots, plant with the crown (where the leaves meet the roots) ABOVE the substrate. Burying the crown causes rot. Root tabs are strongly recommended.

The red color is most vivid on new growth under medium-to-high light with iron-rich dosing. Older leaves mature to deep green over time, which is normal. Trim damaged leaves at the base with sharp scissors. CO2 is not required but speeds growth and improves coloration.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

For the strongest red color, give Red Melon Sword the brighter end of your lighting profile and dose iron-rich fertilizer regularly. Root tabs at the base every 2-3 months. The plant grows large; reserve it for mid-to-large tanks where it has space to develop fully.

Common Questions

Red Melon Sword FAQ

Is Red Melon Sword safe for shrimp?+
Yes — Red Melon Sword is great for shrimp tanks. We select plants for shrimp tanks and handle them with invertebrate safety in mind.
How do I plant it?+
Remove from the pot, rinse most of the rock wool off the roots, and plant in substrate with the crown ABOVE the substrate. Burying the crown causes rot.
How big does it get?+
Red Melon Sword grows similarly large to other Echinodorus Swords — best suited to mid-sized and larger tanks. Not recommended for nano setups.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+. Adding livestock to your order unlocks free 2-Day Shipping at $120+ or free Overnight at $200+.
Do I need CO2 or fertilizer?+
No CO2 required. Root tabs are strongly recommended for color and growth; iron-rich liquid dosing improves the red tone on new leaves. CO2 speeds growth but is not required.
Why are my new leaves more green than red?+
Red color intensity depends on light strength and iron availability. Increase lighting and add iron-rich liquid fertilizer to bring out a more vivid red on new growth.
How is it shipped?+
Plants are packed with damp protective material to help protect them in transit. Weather protection may be used when conditions require it. Plants typically ship Monday through Thursday so they avoid sitting over the weekend.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — Live Plant Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photograph the plant in its original packaging on the day of delivery, before trimming or replanting, and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics' discretion.
