Staurogyne Repens

Staurogyne repens

Why We Love This Plant

  • Selected for shrimp tanks
  • Improves water quality
  • No CO₂ required
  • Beginner-friendly

Staurogyne repens is one of the best low-tech foreground plants available — a creeping, compact plant with small, rounded green leaves that hugs the substrate and spreads horizontally without needing CO2 injection. It produces a lush, dense foreground ground cover under medium light that works in both low-tech and high-tech setups.

Staurogyne repens is genuinely easy. It is forgiving of a wide range of water parameters and performs reliably under conditions where HC Cuba would struggle. A versatile foreground option for shrimp tanks, community tanks, and planted setups at any skill level.

Care Notes

Staurogyne repens roots in substrate. Separate into small clumps and press each clump into substrate about an inch apart with the crowns above the substrate. Root tabs help, especially in inert substrates. Medium light is sufficient — CO2 is not required but speeds up spreading.

Trim the top growth regularly to encourage the plant to stay low and branch horizontally. Left untrimmed it grows taller and more upright rather than spreading flat. One of the easiest carpeting-style plants in the hobby.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Staurogyne repens is the foreground carpeting plant we recommend most often for low-tech shrimp tanks. It works without CO2, tolerates a wide range of parameters, and stays dense with regular trimming. Plant clumps an inch apart and trim the tops every few weeks to encourage horizontal spread.

Common Questions

Staurogyne Repens FAQ

Is Staurogyne repens safe for shrimp?+
Yes — Staurogyne repens is great for shrimp tanks. We select plants for shrimp tanks and handle them with invertebrate safety in mind. The dense creeping growth gives shrimplets excellent foreground cover.
How do I plant it?+
Separate into small clumps and press each clump gently into substrate about an inch apart with the crowns above the substrate. Root tabs help in inert substrates.
How is this different from HC Cuba?+
Staurogyne repens is significantly easier — it carpets under medium light without CO2, tolerates more water conditions, and is much more forgiving. HC Cuba is the premium competition carpet; Staurogyne is the reliable low-tech one.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+. Adding livestock to your order unlocks free 2-Day Shipping at $120+ or free Overnight at $200+.
Do I need CO2?+
No. Staurogyne repens grows and spreads under medium light without CO2. CO2 speeds up spreading and keeps the growth more compact, but is not required.
How do I get it to spread horizontally?+
Trim the top growth regularly. This encourages the plant to branch outward rather than grow upright. Trimming every few weeks keeps it low and dense.
How is it shipped?+
Plants are packed with damp protective material to help protect them in transit. Weather protection may be used when conditions require it. Plants typically ship Monday through Thursday so they avoid sitting over the weekend.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — Live Plant Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photograph the plant in its original packaging on the day of delivery, before trimming or replanting, and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics' discretion.
