Gold Mystery Snails are one of the most popular freshwater snails in the hobby, and for good reason. Their bright yellow-gold shell and dark body create a striking contrast that shows up beautifully in planted tanks. They are completely peaceful, fully shrimp-safe, and will spend their entire day grazing every surface of your aquarium.
Mystery Snails are not the same as pest snails — they reproduce slowly and only above the waterline, which means their population is easy to manage. Adults grow to about 1.5–2 inches in shell diameter. They are a popular choice for shrimp keepers because they occupy a different niche from shrimp.
Care Notes
Mystery Snails need calcium for shell health. Hard water naturally provides this; in softer tanks a cuttlebone or calcium-rich sinking wafer will prevent shell erosion and pitting. Keep the water level a few inches below the tank rim — Mystery Snails are escape artists and will climb out of uncovered tanks.
Never use copper-based medications, algaecides, or plant treatments in a tank with Mystery Snails. Feed blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach) 2–3 times per week in addition to what they graze naturally. Healthy Mystery Snails are active across the entire tank — glass, hardscape, and plants.

Mystery Snails do not eat healthy, established plants. They graze algae, biofilm, and decaying plant matter. Occasional nibbling on very soft leaves can occur if underfed — supplement with blanched vegetables to prevent this.
How do I support their shell health?+
