Amano Shrimp

Caridina multidentata

Why We Love This Shrimp

  • Electric color against dark substrate
  • Beginner-friendly, wide pH range
  • Natural algae and biofilm grazer
  • Peaceful community invertebrate
  • Breeds readily in stable water
  • Quarantined before every shipment

Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata) are the gold standard for algae control in planted aquariums. Named for legendary aquascaper Takashi Amano, who popularised their use as a natural grazing solution, they are noticeably larger and more effective than most freshwater shrimp — capable of tackling hair algae, thread algae, and surface biofilm that smaller species ignore. Their translucent body with a row of lateral dashes makes them nearly invisible against plant stems while staying visually interesting up close.

Amano shrimp do not breed in freshwater. Their larvae require brackish or marine conditions to develop, so established colonies will not reproduce in a home aquarium. Every Amano shrimp is a deliberate addition rather than a self-sustaining colony. Every shrimp we ship is quarantined and health-checked before it leaves.

Care Notes

Amano shrimp are adaptable and hardy but do best in stable, well-established tanks. Maintain pH 6.5–8.0 and temperature 68–78°F. They tolerate a wider parameter range than most freshwater shrimp but are still sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes — do not add to a cycling or newly established aquarium. Keep in groups of at least 5 — lone Amano shrimp become shy and stop foraging visibly. Supplement natural biofilm grazing with algae wafers or blanched vegetables 2–3 times per week. Remove uneaten food within 24 hours. Never use copper-based medications.

Why We Love This Shrimp

01

The Gold Standard for Algae Control

Amano shrimp are larger, bolder, and more effective algae grazers than almost any other freshwater invertebrate. They tackle hair algae and biofilm that smaller shrimp simply won’t touch.

02

Natural and Nearly Invisible

Translucent with subtle lateral markings — Amano shrimp blend into planted tanks naturally. You notice the clean glass and healthy plants before you notice the shrimp.

03

Hardy Enough for Community Tanks

Amano shrimp handle a wider parameter range than most shrimp and hold their own in community aquariums. Larger and more confident than Neocaridina — less likely to hide all day.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Keep at least 5 Amano shrimp per tank — a single shrimp or pair will stay hidden most of the time. A group of 5–10 in a planted tank with moderate surface agitation produces the most consistent, visible grazing. They are most active at dusk initially; once settled in a stable tank, they graze openly throughout the day. Pair with Java Moss or dense stem planting for the most natural presentation.

Common Questions

Amano Shrimp FAQ

Will Amano shrimp breed in my tank?+
No. Amano shrimp larvae require brackish or marine water to develop — they cannot complete their life cycle in a freshwater aquarium. The shrimp you purchase are the shrimp you will have; they will not reproduce in a standard home setup.
Do Amano shrimp eat plants?+
No. Amano shrimp graze algae, biofilm, and decomposing matter from plant surfaces — they do not damage healthy plant tissue. They are safe with all live plants.
What fish are safe with Amano shrimp?+
Small, peaceful fish that cannot fit a shrimp in their mouth: ember tetras, rasboras, otocinclus, small corydoras. Avoid bettas, cichlids, large barbs, and any fish with a track record of shrimp predation. Amano shrimp are larger than dwarf shrimp but still vulnerable to determined predators.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Free 2-Day Shipping on orders $120+. Free Overnight on orders $200+. Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+.
How do I acclimate Amano shrimp?+
Drip acclimate: empty the bag into a small container and drip tank water in at 2–3 drops per second for 30–60 minutes. Net the shrimp into the tank — never add bag water to your aquarium. Dim the lights for the first hour.
How many Amano shrimp should I keep?+
At least 5, ideally 10 or more in a planted tank. A lone Amano or a pair will stay hidden most of the time. A proper group grazes openly and provides noticeably better algae control.
Are Amano shrimp safe with other shrimp?+
Amano shrimp are peaceful with dwarf shrimp and snails when water parameters overlap, but they should not be used in specialized Taiwan Bee or Sulawesi setups unless the parameters are appropriate for both species.
How are Amano shrimp shipped?+
Professionally packed in an insulated box with a heat or cold pack matched to your local weather forecast. Livestock ships Monday through Thursday and delivers Tuesday through Friday. Choose your preferred delivery date at checkout.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — 100% Live Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photo any DOA in the sealed bag on the day of delivery and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics’ discretion.
