Anubias Coffeefolia Potted

Anubias barteri var. coffeefolia

Why We Love This Plant

  • Selected for shrimp tanks
  • Improves water quality
  • No CO₂ required
  • Beginner-friendly

Anubias Coffeefolia is named for its distinctively textured leaves — the new growth emerges with a coppery red-brown tone before maturing to deep green, with pronounced ridges that give the surface a coffee-leaf appearance. It ships potted in a small mesh basket with rock wool, but the long-term home for Anubias is attached to hardscape, not in substrate.

Like all Anubias, Coffeefolia is hardy, slow-growing, and tolerant of a wide range of water parameters. The textured leaves and color contrast on new growth make it a standout midground or hardscape attachment plant for aquascapes that need a more interesting Anubias than the standard nana.

Care Notes

Anubias grows attached to hardscape, not in substrate. The rhizome — the thick horizontal stem at the base of the leaves — must remain ABOVE the substrate; buried rhizomes rot. After removing from the pot and rinsing most of the rock wool out of the roots, attach with super glue gel or thread to driftwood or a flat stone.

Low light is fine; this plant does not need CO2 or fertilizer. The coppery tone on new leaves is most visible under good lighting and a stable nutrient profile. Trim damaged leaves at the rhizome with sharp scissors.

Why We Love This Plant

01

Coppery New Growth

Coffeefolia's new leaves emerge with a warm copper-brown tone before darkening to deep green. The color contrast against mature foliage is its signature look.

02

Textured Leaf Surface

Pronounced ridges across the leaf give Coffeefolia a textured, coffee-leaf appearance that stands out among smoother Anubias varieties.

03

Easy and Shrimp-Friendly

Same low-light, no-CO2, no-fertilizer care as the rest of the Anubias family. Selected for shrimp tanks and handled with invertebrate safety in mind.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Coffeefolia rewards good light. The coppery new growth is its signature feature, and stronger lighting plus a stable nutrient profile help bring out the color contrast against the older deep green leaves. Otherwise, treat it like any other Anubias — rhizome ABOVE substrate, attached to hardscape, no CO2 needed.

Common Questions

Anubias Coffeefolia Potted FAQ

Is Anubias Coffeefolia safe for shrimp?+
Yes — Anubias is great for shrimp tanks. We select plants for shrimp tanks and handle them with invertebrate safety in mind. The textured leaves host plenty of biofilm for shrimp to graze on.
How do I attach it?+
Remove the plant from the pot, rinse most of the rock wool out from around the rhizome, and either tie it to driftwood or stone with thin thread or apply super glue gel to the underside of the rhizome. The rhizome must stay ABOVE the substrate.
Why can't I plant it in substrate?+
Anubias is an epiphyte. The rhizome (the thick horizontal stem) needs to stay above the substrate; burying it causes the rhizome to rot.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+. Adding livestock to your order unlocks free 2-Day Shipping at $120+ or free Overnight at $200+.
Do I need CO2 or fertilizer?+
No. Anubias Coffeefolia grows under low light without CO2 or fertilizer. The coppery color on new growth is more pronounced with stronger lighting and dosing, but not required.
Why is the new growth a different color?+
That is the signature feature of Coffeefolia. New leaves emerge coppery red-brown and gradually mature to deep green. Under good lighting, this color contrast remains visible across the plant.
How is it shipped?+
Plants are packed with damp protective material to help protect them in transit. Weather protection may be used when conditions require it. Plants typically ship Monday through Thursday so they avoid sitting over the weekend.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — Live Plant Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photograph the plant in its original packaging on the day of delivery, before trimming or replanting, and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics' discretion.
