Black Mystery Snails carry a deep dark shell — sometimes appearing solid black, sometimes with subtle blue or purple undertones depending on lighting. The dark body completes the look. They are an excellent choice for aquascapes built around contrast rather than colour.
Like all Mystery Snails, they are peaceful, shrimp-safe grazers that reproduce only above the waterline. Adults reach 1.5–2 inches in shell diameter. Calcium supplementation in softer water is important — shell erosion shows up faster on a dark shell than on lighter variants.
Care Notes
Mystery Snails need calcium for shell health. Hard water naturally provides this; in softer tanks a cuttlebone or calcium-rich sinking wafer will prevent shell erosion and pitting. Keep the water level a few inches below the tank rim — Mystery Snails are escape artists and will climb out of uncovered tanks.
Never use copper-based medications, algaecides, or plant treatments in a tank with Mystery Snails. Feed blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach) 2–3 times per week in addition to what they graze naturally. Healthy Mystery Snails are active across the entire tank — glass, hardscape, and plants.
Black Mystery Snails feature a deep blue-black shell with a dark body — an understated, dramatic look that anchors planted aquascapes without competing visually with brighter livestock.

Yes — fully compatible. Mystery Snails and shrimp coexist peacefully and occupy different niches in the tank. Mystery Snails do not predate shrimp or shrimplets.
Will Mystery Snails overrun my tank?+
No. Mystery Snails reproduce only above the waterline — you will see their pink egg clusters near the top rim of the tank, which makes the population easy to manage. They will not multiply the way pest snails like pond or bladder snails do.

Mystery Snails do not eat healthy, established plants. They graze algae, biofilm, and decaying plant matter. Occasional nibbling on very soft leaves can occur if underfed — supplement with blanched vegetables to prevent this.
How do I support their shell health?+
