Water Wisteria (Hygrophila difformis) is a fast-growing background stem plant with deeply lobed, fern-like leaves that give the plant a soft, lacy texture. It is one of the easier, fastest-growing stem plants in the hobby — useful both as a steady background plant and as a starter plant in newly cycled tanks where its fast nutrient uptake helps stabilize water parameters. It ships as a small bunch of cut stems, lead-weighted together at the base.
Water Wisteria tolerates a wide range of water parameters and grows quickly under medium light without CO2. It can be planted in substrate or left floating; in floating form it produces a denser canopy with shorter, less divided leaves.
Care Notes
Water Wisteria grows fast under medium light. CO2 is not required — the plant absorbs nutrients quickly from the water column and is often used in newly cycled tanks specifically to soak up excess nutrients during the establishment phase.
Trim regularly to keep the bunch from outgrowing the tank. The plant can be propagated by topping and replanting the cuttings, or by letting it float, where it produces a different, denser growth form. Basic liquid fertilization supports the fast growth.
