Bamboo Shrimp

Atyopsis moluccensis

Why We Love This Shrimp

  • Electric color against dark substrate
  • Beginner-friendly, wide pH range
  • Natural algae and biofilm grazer
  • Peaceful community invertebrate
  • Breeds readily in stable water
  • Quarantined before every shipment

Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis) are one of the most behaviourally distinct freshwater invertebrates you can keep. Unlike virtually every other shrimp sold for aquariums, they are true filter feeders — they do not scavenge the substrate at all. They find a spot with water flow, open their fans, and capture suspended particles from the current. Watching a Bamboo Shrimp feed is unlike anything else in a planted tank.

At 2–4 inches they are the largest freshwater shrimp we carry — substantial, slow-moving, and completely peaceful. Males develop stronger, broader fans than females. They will not bother tank mates, plants, or other invertebrates. Every Bamboo Shrimp we ship is quarantined and health-checked before departure.

Care Notes

Bamboo Shrimp are filter feeders, not scavengers — they do not pick food from the substrate. Instead, they position themselves in areas of water flow and extend fan-like appendages to capture suspended micro-particles from the water column. A mature, established tank is essential: newly cycled aquariums do not carry enough suspended biofilm and micro-organisms to sustain them. Moderate to strong flow is required — a powerhead, spray bar, or wavemaker directed across open water gives them a feeding station.

Supplement their natural feeding by releasing powdered shrimp food, spirulina powder, or finely crushed flake food directly upstream of where they are perching. If a Bamboo Shrimp is walking across the substrate instead of sitting and fanning, it is not getting enough food from the water column and needs supplemental feeding upstream. Maintain pH 6.5–7.5 and temperature 72–82°F. Never use copper-based medications.

Why We Love This Shrimp

01

Behaviour Unlike Any Other Shrimp

Bamboo Shrimp do not scavenge. They perch in flow and fan the water column for food — a feeding style that is genuinely fascinating to watch and unlike anything else in a freshwater setup.

02

The Largest Freshwater Shrimp We Carry

At 2–4 inches, Bamboo Shrimp are substantially larger than dwarf shrimp. Visible from across the room, and substantial enough to hold their own alongside peaceful medium-sized fish.

03

Peaceful in Any Community

Bamboo Shrimp ignore every other animal in the tank. No aggression toward fish, shrimp, or snails. They find a spot in the flow and stay there — a calm, low-drama addition to any established planted tank.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation

Bamboo Shrimp need a mature tank — at least 3–6 months running with established biofilm and consistent micro-particle suspension in the water column. Set up a flow source (powerhead, spray bar) that moves water across open mid-tank space; they will find it and station there. If you see a Bamboo Shrimp walking the substrate rather than perching and fanning, it needs supplemental food: release a small pinch of powdered food or crushed spirulina upstream of where it tends to sit. Avoid nippy or aggressive fish that may target their fans.

Common Questions

Bamboo Shrimp FAQ

How does a Bamboo Shrimp eat?+
Bamboo Shrimp are filter feeders. They position themselves in water flow and extend fan-like appendages to capture suspended micro-particles — biofilm, fine particulate foods, and micro-organisms — directly from the water column. They do not graze algae or pick food from the substrate like most shrimp.
Do I need a mature tank?+
Yes. A tank that has been running for at least 3–6 months has enough suspended biofilm and micro-particle concentration to sustain Bamboo Shrimp. Newly established tanks do not, and the shrimp will struggle without supplemental feeding.
Are Bamboo Shrimp safe with fish?+
Yes, with peaceful species. Bamboo Shrimp are entirely non-aggressive. Avoid nippy or aggressive fish that may damage their fans, and any fish large enough to target a 2–4 inch shrimp.
Why are there Small, Medium, and Large variants?+
Bamboo Shrimp are sold by natural body size, not pack quantity. Small is juvenile (roughly 1–1.5 in), Medium is sub-adult (roughly 1.5–2 in), and Large is a fully grown adult (roughly 2–4 in). All are the same species with the same care requirements.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Free 2-Day Shipping on orders $120+. Free Overnight on orders $200+. Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+.
How do I acclimate Bamboo Shrimp?+
Drip acclimate: empty the bag into a small container and drip tank water in at 2–3 drops per second for 30–60 minutes. Net the shrimp into the tank — never add bag water. Place them near a flow source so they can find their feeding station immediately. Dim lights for the first hour.
What should I feed a Bamboo Shrimp?+
In a mature tank they capture naturally suspended biofilm and micro-organisms. Supplement by releasing powdered shrimp food, spirulina powder, or finely crushed flake food upstream of where they are perching. If a Bamboo Shrimp is constantly walking the substrate instead of fanning, it is not getting enough food from the water column — increase supplemental feeding upstream.
How much flow do Bamboo Shrimp need?+
Moderate to strong flow is required. A powerhead, spray bar, or wavemaker that produces a steady current across open water gives them a feeding station. They will naturally move to the highest-flow area of the tank.
Are Bamboo Shrimp safe with Neocaridina or Caridina shrimp?+
Yes — fully compatible. They occupy a completely different niche (water column vs. substrate) and will not compete with or disturb dwarf shrimp.
How are Bamboo Shrimp shipped?+
Professionally packed in an insulated box with a heat or cold pack matched to your local weather forecast. Livestock ships Monday through Thursday and delivers Tuesday through Friday. Choose your preferred delivery date at checkout.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — 100% Live Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photo any DOA in the sealed bag on the day of delivery and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics’ discretion.
