Fascinating to watch
Sun Horn Nerite Snails are a horned Clithon variant with warm sun-gold to amber tones across the shell. The horn-like projections along the shell rim give them a more textured, architectural look compared with smooth-shelled Neritina species. They are smaller than most other Nerite variants in the hobby.
Like all Nerites, they are peaceful, shrimp-safe algae grazers. They need an established tank with algae and biofilm, calcium-adequate water for shell health, and a secure lid.
Care Notes
Nerite Snails are exceptional algae grazers and need an established tank with biofilm and algae already present. New, freshly-cycled tanks often do not have enough algae to support a healthy Nerite — supplement with algae wafers or blanched vegetables if needed.
Calcium availability is essential for shell health. Hard, alkaline water provides this naturally; in softer setups, add a cuttlebone or mineral block. Never use copper-based medications. A tightly fitted lid is strongly recommended — Nerites are climbers and will leave an uncovered tank. Female Nerites may lay small white egg capsules on hardscape and glass; these will not hatch into viable young in freshwater.

Species Spotlight
Why We Love This Snail
01
Distinctive Pattern
Warm sun-gold tones across the shell, with horn projections along the rim — a smaller, more sculpted Nerite variant.
02
Dedicated Algae Grazer
Nerite Snails are among the most effective algae eaters in the hobby — they work the glass, hardscape, and broad leaves, and will not touch healthy plants.
03
Will Not Overrun Your Tank
Nerites need brackish or marine water to reproduce. Eggs you see in freshwater will not hatch into viable young — population stays exactly where you set it.
Community Tank
Compatible Tank Mates
These species coexist peacefully with shrimp. Research before mixing — not every fish is safe.

Expert Advice
Razz Aquatics Recommendation
Pair Nerite Snails with shrimp and live plants for a 24/7 algae-control crew. They handle the algae that shrimp will not touch — particularly on glass and hardscape. Make sure your tank lid is secure: Nerites are some of the most determined climbers in the hobby and will escape uncovered setups overnight.

Common Questions
Sun Horn Nerite Snail FAQ
Are Sun Horn Nerite Snails safe with shrimp?+
Yes — fully compatible. Nerite Snails and shrimp coexist peacefully and occupy different niches. Nerites do not predate shrimp or shrimplets.
Will Nerites eat my plants?+
No — Nerites are dedicated algae and biofilm grazers and will not eat healthy plants. They are one of the safest snails for planted tanks.
How do I support shell health?+
Nerites need calcium to maintain their shell. Hard or alkaline water naturally provides this. In softer tanks, add a cuttlebone or mineral block. Never use copper-based medications, algaecides, or plant treatments.
What is the free shipping threshold?+
Free 2-Day Shipping on orders $120+. Free Overnight on orders $200+. Plants and dry goods ship free at $75+.
Is there a live arrival guarantee?+
Yes — 100% Live Arrival Guarantee on every order. Photo any DOA in the sealed bag on the day of delivery and submit a claim through the Start a Claim page. Approved claims are resolved with store credit, refund, or replacement at Razz Aquatics' discretion.
Will Nerite eggs overrun my tank?+
No. Female Nerites may lay small, hard, white egg capsules on hardscape and glass, but these eggs do not hatch into viable young in freshwater — they require brackish or marine conditions to develop. The capsules can be scraped off if they bother you.
Do I need a tank lid?+
Yes — strongly recommended. Nerites are climbers and will leave an uncovered tank, usually at night. Even tightly fitting glass lids should be checked for gaps around equipment.
How are Sun Horn Nerite Snails shipped?+
Professionally packed in an insulated box with a heat or cold pack matched to your local weather forecast. Livestock ships Monday through Thursday and delivers Tuesday through Friday. Choose your preferred delivery date at checkout.
How do I acclimate Nerite Snails?+
Float the bag 15 minutes for temperature. Drip-acclimate at 2–3 drops per second for 30–60 minutes. Net or gently place the snails on the glass — they may stay closed up for a day while settling. This is normal.
